Graffiti Protection for historical Monuments

NewPro anti-graffiti coating for the European heritage

cannot be delivered at present.

The preservation of world heritage is a high-level social task. Graffiti is an acute all-pervading problem that can be and has to be solved on the international level. For that, novel Graffiti- resistant coatings have to be developed. The requirements for these so-called semi-permanent anti-graffiti coatings for traditional porous building materials are high:

  • should have low surface energy,
  • should be suitable for the permanent outdoor use and highly resistant to the environment,
  • can be removed completely by means of gentle cleaning process,
  • should be permeable to water vapor,
  • should be impermeable to the condensed water,
  • should be optically transparent and opaque, and, thus, invisible to the eye.

As a part of the "Graffitage" EU-project, the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research IAP in cooperation with the Center for Carbon and Polymer Materials of the Polish Academy of Sciences (CMPiW PAN) developed a novel semi-permanent anti-graffiti coating for the European heritage. It was successfully tested by five prestigious European Institutes for building technology. The new protective coating meets the high demands of European monument conservators and restorers. Both polymeric active components (Fraunhofer IAP) and the aqueous coating (PAN) formulations of the protection system have been registered for patent.
